Heating is responsible for a staggering proportion of the energy consumption in buildings, and accounts for 40% of global CO2 emissions! Therefore, the potential is also huge to save energy and lower emissions, especially when looking at how heat is consumed in buildings. A lot of homes don't have any temperature controls installed in the individual rooms. According to a recent European study, energy consumption could be reduced by 30-38% when replacing manual radiator valves (no temperature control) with thermostatic radiator valves (automatic temperature control).
There are an estimated 500 million manual valves still operating in homes across Europe with no thermostatic control to reduce the energy waste. With no thermostatic control, hot water keeps pumping through the heating system without any sense of the actual room temperature. Manual valves are simply operating with and on/off handle uncritically letting hot water pass through the radiators.
The European study shows that EU citizens would save an astounding 12 billion euros annually and reduce CO2 emissions by 29 million tons, if all the 500 million radiators with manual valves in Europe were upgraded. That’s huge! And it’s right at the centre of what you do for a living – optimisation of heating systems.
Not only does changing these 500 million old manual radiator valves make great sense for the way radiators consume heat, it can also do wonders for boiler efficiency! Check out how thermostatic radiator valves can have big effect on energy efficiency in boilers:
When you are changing radiator thermostats, make sure you are offering customers options from the top shelf to maximise the energy savings potential. In Danfoss, we are proud to be able to offer one of the world’s most carbon-friendly filling media in radiator thermostats with the Danfoss RA2000™. This thermostat is produced on hyper-optimised production lines that save cost, energy and raw material. One significant detail in the filling media design of this thermostat makes it a high-performer on reducing carbon footprint:
Additionally, 80% of byproducts and waste from the Danfoss RA2000™ production is in fact reused in the production of new thermostats. That means a highly optimised use of materials wherever possible.
Furthermore, due to the production efficiency and a long lifetime, on average 30+ years, the Danfoss RA2000™ presents a total potential of CO2 savings worth 13 ton compared to a manual radiator valve, which equates to charging your mobile phone 1.6 million times.
Sustainability is all about quality products made responsibly and with long lifetime so we can get more out of less with the planet’s resources. That is why the Danfoss RA2000™ is a great option for a mechanical radiator thermostat with carbon-friendly filling media.
The really exciting news is that this type of product has a really short payback time for the customer. In only 2 years the investment is earned back by the energy savings. That’s a great incentive for your customer to go for this simple green renovation of old radiator controls!
So what are you waiting for? Let’s get the green wave of renovations started, this might be the lowest hanging fruit and the easiest thing to recommend to your customer, with low investment and fast return on the energy bill - only two years after installation.
You can find more about our full range of radiator thermostats by checking out the options below:
And while you are at it, while not upgrade the radiator valves too! We recently made a new greener radiator valve, with pressure independent technology that takes care of all pressure fluctuations in the system. This way, only the exact amount of water needed comes through the pipes, at the right time in the right place to ensure comfort and savings. This product truly gets more out of less. We call it the Danfoss Dynamic Valve™.
Check it out in the video below!
Taking full opportunity of green renovations, a combination of Danfoss Dynamic Valve™ and Danfoss RA2000™ radiator thermostat (best of mechanical range) or award-winning Danfoss Eco™ (easiest from the electronic range) is the strongest recommendation you can provide customers interested in energy optimised radiator control. Energy friendly radiator control doesn’t get any better than this.
